The Harrisburg Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution poured hours and hours of research into confirming the names of at least eighteen Patriots that what reinterred at Shoop’s Cemetery in Harrisburg. The original cemetery, Shoop’s Church Cemetery, was in line of the construction of the highway during the 1950s. The graves were carefully exhumed, documented, and remains reinterred in large section at Shoop’s Cemetery across the highway. A large marker was placed, but no names or mentioning of military service were included.
A longer-term goal of Harris Ferry Chapter SAR is to add a brass marker to the opposite side of the monument, but include the names of all veterans of all wars in this mass grave, including Revolutionary War, War of 1812, and Civil War. A Patriot Burials Marker from the Wiliam G. Pomeroy Foundation and Pennsylvania State Society SAR was approved and is ready for installation along the roadside.
